Discovering Coimbra’s urban biodiversity

Ler em Português

As part of the B_Green Project, in which Milvoz is a partner, a biodiversity observation activity was organised in the city of Coimbra, involving pupils from Jaime Cortesão Secondary School. The initiative took place in the Jardim da Sereia and its surroundings, offering participants an opportunity to experience nature first-hand in a fully urban setting.

Throughout the activity, the students were invited to explore and identify different species of flora and fauna that occur in this urban green space. Birdwatching revealed some of the species that inhabit or regularly use this area, enabling the participants to gain a better understanding of the biological diversity found in urban environments and the importance of green spaces for its conservation.

In addition to the element of discovery and learning, the initiative sought to raise young people’s awareness of the challenges of environmental conservation and the role that every citizen can play in it. Through observing and studying nature, participants were encouraged to develop a closer and more mindful relationship with the ecosystems around them.

This initiative is part of a series of activities organised by the B_Green Project to promote environmental literacy and the active involvement of communities in the enhancement of our natural heritage. By bringing young people into closer contact with urban biodiversity, it helps to foster citizens who are better informed, more aware and committed to nature conservation.
