Serra da Pescaria Bio-Reserve
A privileged hillside overlooking the ocean south of Nazaré — dense Mediterranean woodland sheltering unique fauna adapted to maritime influence.
The Serra da Pescaria Bio-Reserve is the second Bio-Reserve created by Milvoz, the result of a land donation that now comprises it. Located south of Nazaré, this slope of the Serra da Pescaria shelters a diverse, low-structured Mediterranean woodland on its limestone soils — shaped by its high exposure to maritime winds.
Flora
In this paradisiacal setting, characteristic plant species flourish, such as Phoenician juniper, mastic tree, kermes oak, heather, maritime pine and stone pine, creating a dense and impenetrable plant formation that serves as refuge for multiple animal species.
Wildlife
Among the most easily detectable species are the blackcap and the Dartford warbler, birds well adapted to dense shrubs, where they take refuge and forage energetically.
At the top of the slope, perched on a taller plant, we can find the European stonechat, constantly watchful of movements within its territory. More difficult to spot, the dunnock sings its melodious song hidden among the kermes oaks.
With a remarkable ability to hover in the air while beating its wings, scanning the ground for small rodents, birds or insects, the common kestrel never fails to delight.
Among mammals, the European rabbit stands out, betrayed by the small tunnels that form its trails through the vegetation, as well as its latrines in the middle of the path. Its presence attracts predators such as the red fox and the common genet, which also occur on the slope.
Regarding reptiles, the ocellated lizard is a presence worth noting, though rare. The more common Carbonell's wall lizard and the Iberian wall lizard frequently cross our path on sunny days, always alert to potential predators such as the relentless horseshoe whip snake.
Get Involved
Due to the distance of the Serra da Pescaria Bio-Reserve from the Milvoz team's daily base of operations, we are creating a group of local citizens who can visit regularly and help develop this Bio-Reserve.
