Bispo Bio-Reserve

A pioneering collaborative model — a member entrusts their land's management to Milvoz, protecting a highly diverse native woodland in Podentes.

Located near Podentes, an area of highly diverse native woodland joins Milvoz's portfolio of conservation areas. This Bio-Reserve is the result of a partnership with member Luís Cardoso, to whom Milvoz is deeply grateful for his initiative in developing a pioneering collaborative model for the association.

Flora

The protected area shelters a dense woodland with oak, cork oak, strawberry tree, chestnut and elm. Beneath the dense canopy, a rich shrub layer hosts butcher's broom, primroses, forget-me-nots and Solomon's seal.

At the woodland edge, a mosaic landscape greatly enhances biodiversity, providing fauna with a range of food sources and opportunities in a multifunctional system, with traditional agriculture comprising vineyards, orchards, olive groves, meadows and fallow land.

A meadow area within the Bio-Reserve is undergoing an accelerated naturalisation process following the restoration of a degraded agricultural zone. Early in the year, daisies begin to appear, followed by large clusters of scarlet pimpernel. In spring, rosy garlic, centaury and grape hyacinths attract numerous butterflies and other insects, including the painted lady, which has already been observed laying eggs on a spear thistle.

Wildlife

In this context, an extensive array of invertebrates thrives, with particular emphasis on butterflies, which have been inventoried at the site. In the valley bottom, Polygonia c-album, Kuchleria insignata and Valeria jaspidea fly energetically.

The black-headed bunting is abundant along the woodland edges and hedgerows, singing alongside the green woodpecker, the spotless starling and the European turtle dove. In the refuge of dense vegetation, the red squirrel, stone marten and roe deer take advantage of the abundance of food provided by the diverse vegetation.

In the stream, the Iberian frog, the fire salamander and the marbled newt thrive in their favoured niche, sheltering among stone walls and the lush vegetation that helps maintain a cool, humid environment.

A Model for the Future

Milvoz's mission, focused on preserving pockets of rich biodiversity, is fully reinforced by the inclusion of this area. This new partnership with a member carries special symbolism: it demonstrates that anyone can be an agent of change in their territory, actively contributing to the protection of biodiversity refuges — often inconspicuous, but ecologically precious.

Preserving these niches, however small, through a multiplier logic, can have a real impact on building a healthier, more resilient and biodiverse landscape. These actions help maintain centres of genetic diversity and prevent local extinctions — steps that are essential for ecological balance and species survival.

Become an agent in realising Milvoz's mission. Together, we can protect what nature still holds most precious.
