Strengthening the Native Forest

Milvoz recently completed the eucalyptus removal works at the Senhora da Alegria Bio-Reserve, an intervention funded by EDP's Planeta Zero project. Read here about how this process unfolded.

Eucalyptus is an exotic species with negative impacts on Portuguese ecosystems, particularly by fuelling large-scale forest fires and not supporting local biodiversity. For this reason, we set out to remove most specimens of this species on the slope of the Senhora da Alegria Bio-Reserve.

Using a specialist team of arborists, the work was carried out with the aim of minimising the impact on the surrounding woodland from dismantling the existing eucalyptus trees — some of which were very large. Conventional felling of these trees would have caused enormous damage to the surrounding area, so we opted for the least harmful alternative to nature.

The native forest can now continue to develop, and the Bio-Reserve space can fully represent a well-preserved example of a native forest ecosystem, characteristic of the territory in which it is located.
