A massive felling of holm oaks is underway along several kilometres of road linking the villages of Pelmá and Loureira, in Alvaiázere, in an area fully classified under the Natura 2000 Network.

In addition to the hundreds of holm oaks of various sizes cut down, several cork oaks met the same fate, as did Portuguese oaks and olive trees. In response, Milvoz reported the incident to SEPNA and ICNF, awaiting further information and developments.

This environmental assault sets a dangerous precedent in a territory that hosts remarkable protected holm oak formations, and sends a deeply regrettable message to local communities through the illegal actions of the very municipality, which violates the law in plain sight of its citizens.

Timely detection by Milvoz members — always watchful across the territory — allowed this intervention to be identified early enough to prevent it from reaching even greater proportions, as planned under the Municipal Forest Fire Defence Plan.

The active presence of Milvoz across the territory is of the utmost importance. We do not shy away from exposing and reporting any significant threat to the natural values of the Centre region. This vigilant attitude, combined with the good example we seek to set on the ground through our Bio-Reserves, defines the association's philosophy of action.
