At the invitation of the Portuguese Society for the Study of Birds (SPEA), MilVoz participated in the National Short-eared Owl (Asio flammeus) Census, from 14 to 16 January. Survey points were distributed along the Lower Mondego valley, the area most favourable for the species in the region, in order to estimate the number of wintering individuals present.
The points covered by MilVoz members and volunteers were located in the Arunca valley, near Vila Nova de Anços, by São Silvestre and at Alqueidão. Although no individuals of this species were detected at the surveyed locations, their presence was recorded by other participants along the Lower Mondego valley, mainly near the estuary.
