On the first weekend of the year, the Caretaker Group of the Senhora da Alegria Bio-Reserve continued restoration work on the riparian gallery along the banks of Ribeiro dos Polomos, at the foot of the Bio-Reserve.
The invasive exotic Giant Cane (Arundo donax) was removed — the first step towards creating the conditions for native plant species characteristic of these environments to become established. The aim of the intervention is to diversify the riparian vegetation here, reducing the shading of the stream and thereby allowing greater permeability for the many animal species that access all parts of this ecosystem.
Our heartfelt thanks to the fantastic volunteers of the Senhora da Alegria Bio-Reserve Caretaker Group, who have been collaborating with us for several years in ever-growing numbers!
